A military biography by the captain of the U.S. Third Cavalry, detailing his time with George Crook, who fought in the American Civil War, and against the Apaches during the Indian Wars, specifically Geronimo's War in 1880s. The Apaches nicknamed Crook 'Nantan Lupan', or 'Grey Wolf', as a result of his role in the war. Bourke, who served under Crook, was a hero in his own right, winning a Medal of Honor as a cavalryman during the American Civil War, and subsequently graduating from West Point and serving as an army officer. Bourke wrote several works focused on the history of the American West and Native American ethnology. Howes B654 notes that this edition shares the same collation as the 1891 edition, which indicates that any revisions were most likely minimal.
