viii, 410, 393 pp. Preface by Sophia Hawthorne. Both parts of Hawthorne's journals together in one volume, with an engraved frontispiece preceding each part (one of Wordsworth's grave, the other of Kenilworth Castle). Hawthorne is best known for The Scarlet Letter and other fiction mainly focusing on New England, as well as his family's association with Salem, Massachusetts (e.g., The House of Seven Gables was named after the house Hawthorne wrote it in, which is now a popular tourist attraction). These journals detail his time spent in England.
