xiv, [15]-707, [3], 9 pp. Following text is a list, and endorsement of, Paine's works. Paine was a prominent physician who played an important role in the establishment of the medical department at the university of New York. A collection of his letters on cholera was published as The Cholera Asphyxia of New York in 1832. His advocacy also aided in the repeal of a law prohibiting the dissection of the human body. First published in 1871, this work is an extensive revision of his 1848 book 'The Soul and Instinct, Physiologically Distinguished from Materialism.' Paine describes the nature of the human soul, including its materiality and immateriality, explains the doctrines of materialism, lays out the various physical laws governing the soul, and discusses geological principles as they relate to the creation and the flood. Three appendices appear after the text: The Creation and Organization of the Earth; The Flood; The Coal-Formations - Their Connection with the Narrative of the Flood. Paine also mentions Charles Darwin, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, and Baruch Spinoza's philosophical theories as they relate to his views.
