Davidis was an important author of German cookbooks, and this work in particular was considered an essential reference in German households during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was originally published in 1845 in Dusseldorf, and the edition offered here was the first American edition. Georg Brumder, who published this work, was the most prolific publisher of German-American material in the United States, which included newspapers and books (Brumder also operated a bookstore). His business dealings made him a prominent enough citizen that he met personally with several different U.S. presidents. The Germania building he built to house his growing business is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
