188, [2] pp. Woodcut cover art, endpapers, and title page illustration by Rockwell Kent. Kent was among the editors of this Paper Books series, and also designed cloth bindings of the titles in the series for special order by subscribers. Stuart Chase was an American economist, and also wrote 'The Tragedy of Waste' and 'Men and Machines.' His thought was shaped by Henry George, by economic philosopher Thorstein Veblen, by Fabian socialism, and briefly by the Communist social and educational experiments in the Soviet Union to around 1930, though Chase was broadly a modern American liberal. This work was written and sent to the printer before, but published after, the stock market crash of October 1929. As a result, Chase added an introduction which contextualizes the work as it relates to the coming Great Depression.
