Complete in four volumes. xviii, [2], 646, [28]; xi, [3], 589, [26]; xi, [3], 559, [25]; viii, [2], 618, [27] pp. 8vo. Each volume includes a section following text entitled Illustrated Specially Selected for the Pulitzer Prize Edition. Navy blue leather, gilt titles and decorations, all edges gilt, silk moire endpapers, ribbon markers bound in. A scholarly biography of the general in command of the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. It won the 1935 Pulitzer Prize in Biography, and Freeman went on to write a follow-up work about Lee's lieutenants, which cemented his standing as an eminent military historian. Freeman later won another Pulitzer for his biography of George Washington.
