Inspiration for the 2008 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, and Kathy Bates. Winslet won a Golden Globe for best actress, and the film was nominated for numerous other awards. Yates's novel was nominated for the National Book Award, but despite some critics comparing his work to that of James Joyce, he did not gain a wide readership until after his death.
