229 pp. "The volume breaks new ground in Anglo-American research on Russian literature of the eighteenth century. It is the first collection of essays to be issued in English which is specifically devoted to aspects of Russian literature during the culturally significant reign of Catherine the Great. Five of the essays were originally presented as short contributions to a panel at the International Slavic Conference held at Banff in 1974 but they have been considerably expanded and revised for the present volume. Two further essays have been specially commissioned to extend the coverage of the collection. The volume does not, however, attempt to offer a comprehensive survey of the period and the essays assume an awareness of the many unresolved and controversial issues which confront students of a fascinating and complex period of Russian literary history. The volume ends with an important bibliography of English-language scholarship on eighteenth-century Russian literature, thought and culture and a synchronic table of of the main literary events during the reign of Catherine."
