A novel told in the form of a memoir, published anonymously by American novelist, playwright, and physician Robert Montgomery Bird. His original foray into writing was entry into a contest run by Shakespearean actor Edwin Forrest, which he won. Though the two worked together on future projects, Forrest's inequitable compensation for the success of Bird's plays led Bird to explore novels instead.
