158 pp. The illustrations consist of a frontispiece portrait of Addison and Steele and 30 wood-engraved head-pieces, one used at the opening of each essay. Shirley Smith also designed a decorative rule, which is used beneath each head-piece and on the title-page. The essays themselves were first published in Addison and Steele's Spectator in 1711 and 1712, and are reprinted here from the Oxford edition edited by D.F. Bond. This collection focuses on an English squire of Queen Anne's reign, said to be the grandson of the man who invented the English/Scottish country dance of the same name.
