Stavrogin's Confession [Three Hitherto Unpublished Chapters of the Novel The Possessed]

136 pp. Black cloth, gilt titles. Suppressed chapters from Dostoevsky's classic novel The Possessed, sometimes also translated as The Devils, or Demons. This edition is translated into English by Virginia Woolf and S.S. Koteliansky. The publisher's note explains that these chapters were suppressed by mutual consent between the author and publisher, and that two versions of the chapters exist in Russian, the more recent of the two being the version translated here. Also includes a psychoanalytic study of the author by Sigmund Freud. The Possessed is a political novel of Imperial Russia in the late 19th century, criticizing liberal idealists as well as the conservative establishment's reaction to them, and portraying utopian and positivist ideas as unrealistic.
