85 pp. Sutter’s Sodas Satisfy…and so does Jane Sutter Brandt’s memoir about this lovely mainstay, started by her great-grandfather, of Burlington, Iowa. The thing is, although the Sutter Drug Store and soda shop were very much a part of Burlington’s community, so richly described by the author, I found myself reminiscing about the soda shops and mom-and-pop pharmacies I grew up with in Buffalo, New York. Jane Sutter manages to pay homage to Burlington and Sutter Drug specifically, while at the same time capturing the universality of a unique time in our history.
