299 pp. Thomas Nast cartoons. David Ross Locke (1833-1888), who also wrote under the pseudonym Petroleum V. Nasby, was an American journalist and early political commentator during the American Civil War. He worked on several newspapers including the Democrat, the Pittsburgh Chronicle, the Toledo Blade, the Plymouth Herald and the Bucyrus Journal. Locke was in Bucyrus, when the Civil War broke out. He is most famous for the 'Nasby Letters.' Written in the semi-literate spelling used by other humourists of the time, they were intended to rally support for the Union cause. Published in Locke's own newspaper the Weekly Blade from 1861 until 1887 they were loved by many including Abraham Lincoln. Several collections were published including The Nasby Papers (1864).
