281 pp. Translated into English from the original Russian by Alec Brown, woodcut illustrations by Peter Pendrey. Also translated as 'The Artamonov Business' or 'The Artamonovs and Decadence,' this novel was written during the author's ten-year emigration from Soviet Russia. It and The Life of Klim Samgin are considered his best works. The story follows three generations of a pre-revolutionary industrialist family, from the beginning of 1860s to the Revolution of 1917. Despite being nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature five times, Gorki never won it.
