Full tree calf, debossed 'Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge' stamp on front board of each volume. An examination of Christian religion and the history of the Church by the English poet laureate of the Romantic school, and one of the group now called the Lake Poets. Southey's religious convictions were strong enough that he attacked Byron and others of what he called the Satanic School of poets. This was part of a long-standing feud between the two, and many contemporaries criticized Southey for abandoning the progressive ideas of his youth in favor of money and status. This work remains a valuable addition to scholarship on the Church of England, and includes historical commentary spanning from the Roman empire through the time of King James II.
