It was written to interest and inspire young boys of the second half of the 19th century. The book was based on a real journey made by Henry M Stanley GCB (1841 – 1904) a Welsh-American explorer, journalist, soldier, colonial administrator, author and politician who was famous for his exploration of Central Africa and his search for the missionary and explorer David Livingstone, whom he later claimed to have greeted with the now-famous line: "Dr. Livingstone, I presume'".
