The Calas Affair: A Treatise on Tolerance (The Folio Society)

Regular price $ 25.00
xx, 145 pp. Translated and edited by Brian Masters, engraved frontispiece and other reproductions of contemporary illustrations throughout. Voltaire's Traite sur la tolerance was first published in 1763, the year after Jean Calas's torture and execution by the Catholic magistracy in Toulouse. Voltaire, sensing a miscarriage of justice, fought on behalf of Calas's family to have the conviction overturned, and this work has since become an interesting touchpoint for religious tolerance as it relates to judicial matters. The plates reproduce seventeenth- and eighteenth-century engravings, etchings and documents.
