205 pp. A collection of classic Chinese stories, translated into English here for the first time. From the translator's preface: "Most of the stories appearing in 'The Chinese Decameron' were translated into French several generations ago, from the original Chinese, by George Soulie De Morant. He culled them from the old classic novels of the 16th century, which were as is usual in Chinese Letters, very voluminous in size, comprising often sixty tomes and containing unusual tales about the Chinese monks. The exploits of these bonzes compared to those of the monks of Rabelais, Aretino and Boccaccio, appear exquisite in their sensuousness and never as brutal and vulgar as those of the Middle Ages... These stories were never before translated into the English language, and they will become a 'bonne bouche' for the connoisseurs, the gourmets and collectors."
