The Coming of the New Deal (The Age of Roosevelt)

Arthur Schlesinger Jr.'s three volumes on The Age of Roosevelt remain one of the most insightful explanations of the era preceding the Second World War. This second volume, focusing primarily on the years 1933-34, the beginning of of FDR's first term as President, describes the adjustment of the American people to the New Deal. The author's epigraph sums up the story: "There is nothing more difficult to carry out, nor more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to handle, than to initiate a new order of things."
