xv, [1], 208 pp. This edition of St. Augustine's Confessions contains the first ten books, which tell the story of his life, and omits the last three books, which comment brilliantly on the story of creation but add nothing of autobiographical value. Here we have his childhood, his surrender to sin, his embracing of the Manichaean heresy, and his conversion to the Church. Augustine had two passions seldom found at such intensity in one man - the passion of the body and the passion of the intellect. The conflict of the two tormented him cruelly, and of the torment was born a masterpiece.
