The Letters of King George III

xvi, 293 pp. From a vast mass of material, Mr. Dobree has selected a series of letters, many of them hitherto unpublished, which show the progress of George III as King. The larger proportion of them belongs to the period before his great triumph of 1784 when, after twenty years of struggle, he succeeded, as he thought, in smashing the great so-called "Whig" oligarchy, and brought the Constitution back to what he considered more orthodox lines.
