lvii, [1], 735 pp. Edited by Melvyn and Joan New, with an introductory essay by Christopher Ricks, and an introduction and notes by Melvyn New. Originally published in nine volumes, 1759-1767, generally viewed as one of the great comic novels in English literature. The text follows that of the first edition, published in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767. The hiatus in the page numbering is caused by there being no chapter 24, only a blank page, as Sterne intended. Folio 1968 - 71 notes that some members thought this a fault, and returned their copies.
