Prefatory Note: This edition of Robinson Crusoe is based upon a more elaborate one, which is a by-product of over ten years of labor spent upon the life and works of Daniel Defoe. All statements made in the Introduction and in the Notes, except where the contrary is expressly affirmed, rest upon these investigations, and will be found in most cases more fully treated in the larger edition, to which teachers and pupils are referred. Here the effort has been made to present the masterpiece with but slight incumbrance upon the reader's enjoyment, and in a text which, although somewhat modernized, represents adequately, from a collection of practically all the important early editions, the textual state of the story as Defoe gave it to his first readers.
