viii, 359, [1], 33 pp. Green cloth, decorative gilt titles in relief, black decorations and borders, engraved illustrations throughout, decorative initials. A Victorian era novel of the working class poor in London, reminiscent of the works of Charles Dickens, especially Oliver Twist, given its depictions of child labor, poverty, and life on the streets. Written by a journalist now considered a pioneer in investigative journalism, it was intended to expose social inequality, and was originally serialized in the monthly magazine The Young Englishwoman between February 1865 and early 1866.
