Photographic frontispiece, black-and-white illustrations throughout. A collection of comical contributions from members of the lodges of various fraternal organizations, including verse, short stories, parables, etc. The collection takes its title from the common belief that initiates of the Odd Fellows and the Freemasons had to ride a goat to be accepted into the organization. "The story of the goat—although perhaps inspired by mediaeval superstition and promoted by anti-masonic attacks—may have only represented a literary burlesque intended to poke fun at fraternal initiation, and was never a widespread belief. In its humorous form it is clear that the story has been kept alive by freemasons and not by anti-masons." (Grand Lodge of British Columbia and Yukon)
