vii, [1], 1942 pp. 8vo. Dark grey polished calf, morocco spine labels, gilt titles and double rules, gilt stamped turn-ins, marbled edges and endpapers. Originally published in four volumes in the 1866 as New Testament for English Readers, which in turn was translated from Alford's eight volume New Testament in Greek, a project he worked on for twenty years. A second edition quickly followed in 1868, which a brief note preceding the text explains was because 'evidence of the recently-found Sinaitic Manuscript has been added to our ancient testimonies regarding the Sacred Text. This has occasioned many variations, which have been indicated in the margin of this Edition, so as to make it comformable to the last Edition of my Greek Testament. The notes, except where such variations necessitated a change, remain as before."
