288 pp. An account of the three-day Jubilee held in September 1851 to celebrate the completion of the Boston-Montreal Railway line and the beginning of service connecting Boston with Montreal and the Western United States. The book, prepared at the request of the City Council of Boston, provides a narrative description of the pageant and other celebrations in Boston. The extensive celebrations included speeches by Daniel Webster and President Millard Fillmore; Lord Elgin and Joseph Howe spoke for Canada. The book describes the preparations for the events, the order of the festivities and the distinguished visitors who took part, the speeches, the military and maritime excursions, and the members of the lengthy parade as well as detailed descriptions of the elaborate decorations put up throughout downtown Boston on residences and commercial buildings.
