xlvi, 562 pp. The Sacred Scriptures of the Japanese is a book by Post Wheeler that explores the religious practices and beliefs of the Japanese people. It includes translations of the Kojiki and Nihongi, as well as other lesser works. The Kojiki, or "Records of Ancient Matters", and the Nihon-gi, or "Chronicles of Japan", are also sacred texts of the Shinto religion. These books were compiled in 712 CE and 720 CE respectively, and are collections of traditional teachings and ancient myths that were previously passed down orally. Other Shinto religious scriptures include the Kogoshūi ("Gleanings of Ancient Works") and the Engi shiki ("Institutes of the Engi Period").
