The first, The West Portals of Saint-Denis and Chartres, was first published in 1952, and is reproduced here with the complete original text and plates; the second, The Sculptors of the West Portals of Chartres Cathedral: Their Origins in Romanesque and Their Role in Chartrain Sculpture, is presented here for the first time, and attempts 'to discover the individual, artistic personalities of the four major Chartres sculptors as well as those of their five identifiable assistants. An introduction written by the author in 1985 explaining the connection between the two works precedes the text.
