A groundbreaking Western novel: considered by many to be the first true western, it inspired numerous successful authors in the genre, from Zane Grey to Louis L'Amour. Six different film adaptations were made, the first in 1914 (directed by Cecil B. DeMille), the last in 2000, with Gary Cooper starring in a 1929 version.
