x, 364 pp. 8vo. Color frontispiece with captioned tissue guard, 1 color plate in text, black-and-white drawings by author. The second book in the popular series featuring Doctor John Dolittle, who can speak to animals. This was also the second book ever to win the Newbery Medal (1923). The series eventually included 12 novels, from Dolittle's perspective, one from an animal's perspective, and a day book with illustrations and excerpts from previous books. Original editions of some of Lofting's works -- including this one -- are textually different than modern editions, which have removed some racist terminology. "When his colleague Long Arrow disappears, Dr. Dolittle sets off with his assistant, Tommy Stubbins, his dog, Jip, and Polynesia the parrot on an adventurous voyage over tropical seas to floating Spidermonkey Island."
