Complete in forty hardcover volumes. Original olive cloth, paper spine labels, red and olive titles, olive rules. Each volume includes an engraved frontispiece and a color lithograph preceding text. Engraved and etched plates with captioned tissue guards in text. Each of these chromolithographs is a facsimile of unique manuscript and book illustrations showing the development of illustrating techniques throughout the history of incunabula and print. A wide-ranging collection of literature, history, verse, and drama covering an enormous span of time, highlighting the most important works from various eras in the literary spectrum. Quite scarce, and most often found only in partial form - our research showed only one forty-volume set in institutional holdings, and none in the trade. Precedes the more well-known Britannica Great Books and Harvard Classics sets, which it perhaps inspired to some degree.
