Original green cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edges gilt. Matched set of the works of the American naturalist and friend to such literary greats as Ralph Waldo Emerson. Thoreau is best known for Walden and Civil Disobedience. This set was originally released in 1893, and collected many of his writings that had not been published before that point. It was later superseded by the Walden Edition and the Manuscript Edition, both printed in 1906, which added photogravures, a new introduction, and more extensive transcripts of his journals. This set remains a rather more affordable alternative to those highly sought after collections.
