x, 148 pp. Each of the thirty-two photographs is captioned with Thoreau's own words which was the aim of the editor when he set out with his camera to 'see' Cape Cod through Thoreau's eyes. Here are the scattered apply trees, the steep-roofed houses, the high land where 'in gales you must hold onto the light-house to prevent being blown into the Atlantic,' and stretches of sand 'all braided and woven' by the waves, the wind-browned fishermen, the sand-pipers 'trotting close to each wave, and waiting for the sea to cast up their breakfast.
