xxi, 453 pp. 4to. 10 5/8 x 7 3/4. Original beige cloth, brown borders and man on camel motif on front cover. Illustrated endpapers, full-page illustrations by Edy Legrand. An abridged version of the classic travelogue (abridgment by Edward Garnett, with a prefatory note, and a general introduction by T.E. Lawrence). Originally published in 1888, but not widely read until it was rediscovered by T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), who provided an introduction for the republication. A vast recounting of Doughty's treks through the Arabian deserts, and his discoveries there. It is written in an extravagant and mannered style, largely based on the King James Bible, but constantly surprising with verbal turns and odd inventiveness.
