Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes (1879) is one of Robert Louis Stevenson's earliest published works and is considered a pioneering classic of outdoor literature. There are 32 illustrations, mostly vignettes, including the frontispiece and cover design. Ardizzone's original head-piece drawings incorporated capital letters felt by the designer (Peter Guy) to be unusable; the artist was amused at his request to remove them, and conceded 'I always was a ham-fisted letterer'.
