vi, 352 pp. Grey cloth, gilt and blue titles, blue design motif on spine and front board with CSA flag in red and blue. Black-and-white frontispiece and plates. A military memoir by a lieutenant in the Confederate States Navy who served on the C.S.S. Alabama. The Alabama was a commerce raider built by the British, exploiting a loophole in the neutrality law that stated warships could be constructed at British shipyards provided they were not armed for combat until they were in international waters. The ship had a short but successful career, capturing or sinking 65 Union vessels without loss of life on either side, until she was sunk during a battle near France in 1864.
