Engraved frontispiece of 'The Old Liquor Store', several engraved plates in text, by 'Billings'. A temperance novel telling the story of Mr. Samuel Beals Jr., or 'Uncle Sam', the owner of a wholesale liquor business, and depicted as building his wealth and success on the destruction of the lives of others. Clearly meant as an allegory encouraging the United States to make legislative reforms regarding the sale of alcohol - even includes a description of a 'temperance village'.
