In modern times a classic naval battle involving opposing fleets is highly unlikely. Instead warships have specific roles and missions to carry out and need to be able to protect themselves against all forms of attack while so engaged. Much of a modern engagement is fought in virtual terms using electronic means. Laser-based weapons are being developed and could eventually replace guns and missiles. The pace of change is as great as ever and it would be a brave commentator who would attempt to describe what a warship will look like at the start of the twenty-second century."
