To truly partake in the sacrament requires faith. Cranmer distinguishes Christ's spiritual presence from his sacramental presence. Near the end of his life Zwingli summarized his understanding of the Eucharist in a confession sent to King Francis I, saying: "We believe that Christ is truly present in the Lord's Supper; yea, we believe that there is no communion without the presence of Christ.
